HAROON MIRZA: GIVES THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN ACT

Central to a forthcoming exhibition at ACCA, London-based artist Haroon Mirza will construct a studio inside the gallery, where local and international artists, musicians and dancers will participate in week-long residencies, culminating in the creation of new work and a live performance on Tuesday 8 October.

Haroon Mirza has accumulated some of the most prestigious prizes in the art world, including a Silver Lion at the 2011 Venice Biennale. Mirza likens his art-making methodology to that of a composer – arranging both the aesthetic and acoustic properties of materials and space into new audible, visual and haptic forms. This new exhibition, The Construction of an Act, presented with the Melbourne International Arts Festival, has been conceived as if the ACCA gallery spaces are an instrument, with the exhibition forming an overall score.

A central element, a new commission created especially for ACCA, is an in-gallery studio, within which a live performance will be developed as the final outcome of three residencies by: composer James Rushford; musicians Jessica Aszodi (soprano), Alexander Garsden (guitarist) and Freya Schack-Arnott (cello); and choreographer Julie Cunningham with dancer Chess Boughey.

As a provocation for each resident, Mirza has scripted a science fiction narrative – with references to nature, artificial intelligence, psychedelic substances and the healing potential of song, loosely structured on the Adhan, the Islamic call to prayer. Haroon Mirza: The Construction of an Act thus opens as a studio and a stage set for action: the nature of which will be revealed in the process of its eventual enacting.
