AUSTRALIAN MUSIC VAULT SHOWS THE JOURNEY OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC

Melbourne will have a new exhibition space dedicated to Australian contemporary music in the Australian Music Vault opening at the Arts Centre Melbourne on Tuesday, 19 December.

Created in collaboration with the music industry and the Victorian State government, the Australian Music Vault will be a free exhibition space, featuring education programs, and fully integrated digital program. Incorporating a $8.3 million investment, Victoria’s Minister for Creative industries says the Vault is part of its commitment to strengthen the State’s music industry and culture.

“Australia has a proud contemporary music history and a proud live music culture, especially here in Victoria. This is an important part of who we are and it’s something to celebrate.”

“The Australian Music Vault will bring all this to life, telling the stories of Australian music through the people and events who have shaped it and drawing on Arts Centre Melbourne’s extraordinary, internationally significant collection of music treasures. This project has been a long time coming, championed by many in our music industry, and we are pleased to be bringing it to life.”

The Vault will feature a collection of historic musical items from iconic people, events, and places that have come to define Australian music, with founding patrons including Kylie Minogue, Archie Roach, ‘Molly’ Meldrum and Michael Gudinski.

The Vault will hold a vast array of items from musical greats like The Seekers, AC/DC, Olivia Newton-John, among many others and is not organised by chronological or genre themes but will hold items and memorabilia from throughout the ages. One key theme titled, The Real Thing explores if there is really an ‘Australian Voice’ in our musical influences. Another theme is Punk/New Wave which coincides with the 40th anniversary of punk.

The Australian Music Vault is hosted at the Arts Centre Melbourne, which is home to an established Australian music collection. This music collection is part of the Centre’s Australian Performing Arts Collections which is a specialist collection documenting Australia’s circus, dance, music, opera and theatre heritage history and has more than 600,000 items in costume, designs, programs, photographs and memorabilia.
