As a 'Master' or one of the most revered fashion designers of the 20th century, Cristóbal Balenciaga - or simply known as 'Balenciaga' - the exhibition will arrive at the Bendigo Art Gallery this Saturday, 17 August 2019.

Starting out with humble beginnings in the Basque region of Spain, Balenciaga came to make a name for himself, and 10 years after starting an apprenticeship at a tailors in San Sebastian, he opened his first fashion house in 1917.

Today, more than one hundred years ago, his work will be honoured in the exhibition 'Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion', a collection organised by London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, and opening at Bendigo Art Gallery on Saturday, 17 August.

Showcasing some of the exquisite craftsmanship and pioneering use of fabrics revolutionised by 'The Master', as he was referred to, he came to set the scene for modern design.

His garments are characterised by their sculptural quality, deft manipulation of textiles and dramatic use of colour and texture.  Revered by his contemporaries, including Christian Dior and Coco Chanel, he is referred to as ’The Master’.

The exhibition will include a thorough list of public programs, including a presentation by Stephanie Wood, Curator of Fashion and Textiles at the Victoria and Albert Museum, who

will discuss the life and legacy of Balenciaga in a Curator’s Talk at Bendigo Art Gallery on Saturday 17 August, from 2 - 3pm.

A new Thursday evening series, Behind Belanciaga, with an afternoon exhibition viewing, a glass of wine and an illustrated lecture, where guests will examine Balenciaga’s legacy and broader context, including:

  • Professor Peter McNeil on Fashion and Post War Promises on Thursday 26 September

  • A panel discussion on the rise and fall of department stores on Thursday 10 October

  • Maggi Eckardt on her first-hand experiences modelling for Balenciaga in Paris in the 1960s on Thursday 31 October.

In October, Bendigo Art Gallery will launch Friday Nights after Five, with late night exhibition viewings, a pop-up lounge, pampering sessions and luxe canapés.
