'BECOME THE ONE' THEATRE REVIEW

Photographer: Jodie Hutchinson

Gasworks Theatre offered a fantastic venue for emerging playwright Adam Fawcett’s first play, and it is little wonder that it was selected as winner of the 2018 Gasworks Playtime Stage Readings Event for Midsumma.

The intimate nature of the space and minimalist set design helped the audience to get 'up close and personal' to connect with the warm and funny Noah as he struggled with the ups and downs of his relationship with Tom - who is almost excruciatingly awkward in his attempts to woo Noah, and to come to terms with his own sexuality. Tom is also challenged by the impact his relationship has with Noah, and what this will have on his football career.

Cleverly, the consequences of a series off-stage events were played out on-stage vignettes with Tom and Noah in Tom’s apartment. In one scene, Tom heads off to the AFL Awards night without Noah (of course) who, smartly dressed in his tuxedo, watches the event alone on the TV. A very poignant moment in the play indeed.

Spoiler alert? The final scene will bring something quite unexpected. You will need to see how things play out for Tom and Noah, who are played brilliantly by Chris Asimos and Henry Strand, for yourself. But rest assured that no member of the audience will be disappointed with what transpires for our two star-crossed lovers!

Rating: 4.5/5 Excellent! definitely worth seeing
