Showcasing 70 years of fashion genius, the National Gallery of Victoria’s latest exhibition, The House of Dior, shows in meticulous detail why this fashion house remains among the world’s most famous of all designer wear.
The result of an exclusive collaboration between the NGV and the House of Dior, Paris, the exhibition features a stunning collection of more than 140 garments dating back to its opening year in 1947.
“The exhibition will invite Australian and international audiences to discover some of the most significant couture designs of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries” NGV director, Tony Ellwood said.
“The exhibition is a celebration of Dior’s most landmark moments and designs, including the iconic “New Look’ silhouette, which revolutionised women’s fashion in the 1950's, through to the present-day contemporary aesthetic, “Mr Ellwood said.
In honour of the exhibition opening, the NGV is excited to welcome artisans from the Christian Dior atelier in Paris, who will be working on couture garments in the exhibition space during the first and last weeks of the exhibition, highlighting the extraordinary technical skills required for Christian Dior Couture.
Among some historical pieces including the iconic “New Look” collection, it has a collection of ballgowns, evening dresses, wedding gowns, and pieces from the Houses’ first female Creative Director, Maria Grazia Chiuri.
The exhibition goes through the extensive work done by Christian Dior and his early influences, as well as the milestones of its six successive designers, following Christian Dior’s untimely death in 1957.
The exhibition also examines Dior’s special affinity with Australia, and particularly the historic Spring 1948 fashion parade at David Jones, Sydney, that featured 50 original creations by Christian Dior. This was the first representative Dior collection to be shown outside of Paris.
The stunning collection also assembles an array of material from the Dior archives including accessories, shoes, sketches, photography and haute couture toiles (prototypes) and other multimedia.
Extraordinary in quality and a historic time travel in fashion, The House of Dior is one exhibition not to be missed!
The House of Dior is on from the 27 August to 7 November 2017 at NGV International.
