Dance Massive 2019 returns to Melbourne audiences to offer a huge selection of contemporary dance works from the 12 to 24 March 2019. Artists from across Australia invite you to pause, be curious, pay attention and step out of your comfort zone.

In this sixth edition of Dance Massive, we reveal a contemporary dance festival of urgent, thought-provoking work made in direct response to our times. The 2019 program includes vital questions of identity, equality, environmental collapse, rapid technological growth, a longing for home and so much more.

"Dance Massive is an extraordinary biennial event – it’s Australia’s biggest festival that places the ingenuity and innovation of the Australian dance scene on full display", says Arts House Artistic Director, Emily Sexton.

“I’m delighted that the Arts House program at Dance Massive includes such a diversity of First Nations dance practice, alongside industry icons such as Lucy Guerin Inc and Force Majeure, and forward-thinking artists like Luke George and Melanie Lane,” said Sexton.

Featuring a range of works from three major arts organisations; the Arts House (North Melbourne), Dancehouse and the Malthouse Theatre, along with associate partners; Abbotsford Convent, Temperance Hall and The Substation, and numerous other venues, it allows the consortium, who have a history of programming contemporary dance works for Australian audiences, to share resources, collaborate and promote contemporary dance under one banner.

First Nations artists and choreographers are a focus of the Dance Massive Arts House program, with works from Marrugeku, Karul Projects, Joel Bray and DubaiKungkaMiyalk curated by Mariaa Randall.

Some key Dance Massive 2019 shows include:

  • Make Your Own World by Lucy Guerin Inc (Arts House)

  • The Perception Experiment by Madeleine Krenek and Frankie Snowdon / GUTS Dance // Central Australia (Arts House)

  • Universal Estate by Antony Hamilton Projects (Arts House)

  • Cinematic Experiments - Margie Medlin (The Substation)

  • RECITAL by Claire Edwardes & Richard Cilli (The Substation)

Since 2009, Dance Massive continues to welcome new audiences, hosting in this time more than 56,000 people to 90 contemporary dance works.
