DANCE MASSIVE 2019: 'RECITAL' REVIEW

Recital is one of several shows on for Dance Massive 2019 at The SUBSTATION created by Richard Cilli and Claire Edwardes. A unique show, that has talent in droves, and contains all the separate elements of what makes contemporary dance memorable.

As a performance of dance, Recital demonstrates the power of music and sound with instruments, especially since the two main performers have a wonderful synergy while working together.

Featuring percussionist Claire Edwardes and dancer Richard Cilli, the performance seems to incorporate all stages of human friendship - including being rivals, friends and lovers. Recital begins with the creation of many different sounds and dance and the playful personality of humans, as well as jealousy and rivalry alongside it, clear for everyone to see.

Without words or dialogue, the performance is led by percussionist Claire Edwardes who shows her talents in playing several different instruments including the xylophone. Dancer Richard Cilli, who is her partner in crime, also expertly expresses himself through their medium while presenting their art emotionally simultaneously.

Directed by Gideon Obarzanek, this performance works through the joy, frustration and challenge of being friends and sees the friendship take a turn to the serious with some wrestling, ending with an almost climatic, music-dance piece - a fully contemporary piece of dance. While this performance may not have dialogue or an obvious story-line, it still shows you the complexity of variety and expressiveness we see in the human condition along with glimpses of what we hold inside.
