Host Dining Room might be Melbourne’s best kept dining ‘secret’ but not for long!
Tucked away in a quiet side street in Brunswick seemingly far from the bustle and noise of Sydney Road, Host reminded me of a Chicago speakeasy – where only those who knew the secret “knock” would be allowed to enter.
Housed in an old factory, this secluded ambience continues inside with diners seated in booths along the side of the building with a full view of the kitchen where chef “Flo” and the crew assemble your repast.
Chef Florian Ribul, recently listed in the FoodService's 50 Next Generation Top Aussie Chefs, is certainly leading the way in inventive and flavoursome dishes to please all palates. Indeed, as Host Chef Flo says, “Every dining experience at Host is different. Change is the only way forward” – and true to this - Flo changes the menu daily!
At out visit, we chose Salmon in Jalapeno Butter; Braised Beef Cheek, Soured Mushrooms and Shallots; Jerusalem Artichoke, Castelfranco, Apple and Chestnut; Roast Pheasant - served with sides of Parsnips and Roasted Cabbage. Freshly baked sourdough bread was served (on request) with the main meals. The star of the desserts was the Pepper Meringue that packed a surprising ‘punch’ so different from the usual sugary taste we expect from this dessert.
For the more adventurous eater – I would try the set menu priced at $65 per head. Offering a wealth of options diners are invited to discuss their requirements with the wait staff but please make sure that you allow for plenty of time to enjoy this ‘feast’.
Host also offers a boutique wine list selected to compliment the daily menu offerings. We chose a red - the 2014 Carussin ‘Asinoi’ Barbera, Piemonte in the 500ml carafe to share ($30).
Delightful for its dishes, wine and service – Host is sure to become a Melbourne hotspot. Visit it now before it becomes too popular!
