'I AM HARLEQUIN' PERFORMANCE REVIEW

I am Harlequin revels in a dark and naughty show

Oh Harlequin! What a very naughty boy! Ignite The Dark is a Melbourne jazz dance company whose performance of Harlequin is a lively and intriguing mix of traditional pantomime, dance, tumbling and wicked, wicked fun.

Harlequin bounds through life, cheeky and irrepressible, courting the lovely Columbina and enticing the mysterious Pierrot to misbehave. The independent Columbina dreams of freedom and a life that is hers. She sets in motion events to thwart her infuriated Mother’s plan to marry her to the arrogant, wealthy and ugly Scaramouche that put everyone’s lives – and souls – in danger.

Adapting the traditional Pantomime of Harlequin and Columbina to a dark and mysterious stage setting, the cast move visually between eras, from life to death to life again. The costumes are vivid and visually thrilling, ranging from traditional Renaissance Pantomime, chic and sexy French burlesque to current fashion. The costumes very much used to set the settings and define the eras.

A dark and eerie music score offsets the beautifully lit smoky stage setting and the agile stage becomes as mobile as the performers with the movement of pieces of furniture incorporated into the dance sequences. As with all good pantomime, the audience is encouraged to clap and laugh along at the energetic antics.

I am Harlequin is an entertaining and an engaging experience for all ages.
