Melbourne Lebanese favourite, Mama Manoush has relocated to a new site on Lygon Street, East Brunswick. Shifting in November, this local favourite has gone from strength to strength now finding a larger new premise in Brunswick East.
Makers of some fine Lebanese food, Mama Manoush continues to offer the same traditional cuisine and attentive service, now with a larger dining hall and modern ambience.
Arriving late on a week night, the place was full, with loud music and tables scarce. The service staff were swift however and found us a table. Drinks at Mama Manoush gives some interesting options - all with the standard wine and cocktail options but also with a handful of Lebanese wine options. Their Les Breteche Roughe 2014, from the Beka Valley was earthy and aromatic.
The food menu on the other hand, had some real treats. We decided to share a number of dishes, ordering a main and three smaller dishes. The three smaller dishes were the Makanek – some small lamb and beef sausages served with grapes, a char-grilled lamb skewer Lahem Meshwi, and the traditional Tabouli salad. To compliment this, the main we ordered was the delicious Beitenjan, a stuffed eggplant with marinated lamb shank in tomato sauce and olives, served with saffron rice with yoghurt.
All the food proved memorable with the sausages spicy and fragrant, having the sweetness of the grapes and going well with the lemony tabbouli. The lamb skewers came medium rare and tender but the standout was the Beitenjan, which took the idea of melting eggplant and lamb shank to new heights. This dish was delicious and blended the sour-tomatoey-ness flavours with lamb, salty olives, and sour yoghurt, and proved tasty and satisfying.
A fabulous feed, this place has great food, attentive service and great ambience and is a brilliant choice for casual eating or dining out for friends for the festive season.
