Hosting a full program over 26 days, this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2019 opens today, delivering a record-breaking line-up of 616 shows, with more than 7,700 individual performances!
Featuring such headline acts like Hannah Gadsby, Kitty Flanagan, Judith Lucy, Ronny Chieng, Tommy Little, Urzila Carlson and Michelle Wolf, among many others, the Festival offers the full spectrum of laughter from deep belly laughs of stand-up, to film, sketch, improvisation, musical and satire – and everything in between!
‘Clever, funny people from all corners of the globe have packed their entertaining opinions and crazy skills into shows created especially for Melbourne’s comedy fans. There’s something for every age and every taste. There’s so much to discover that we attract comedy explorers from all over the world,” says Festival Director and CEO of MICF, Susan Provan.
This year’s events are taking place across 100 venues including the Melbourne Town Hall, Comedy Theatre, Athenaeum Theatre, Arts Centre Melbourne, Belleville, Imperial Hotel, The Butterfly Club, the Carlton Club, Trades Hall, among many others.
Local comic talent coming from Tasmania to far North Queensland will include Cal Wilson, Anne Edmonds, Fiona O’Loughlin, Nick Cody, Nath Valvo, Nazeem Hussain, Tom Gleeson, Wil Anderson, Joel Creasey, Becky Lucas, and Charlie Pickering, alongside others representing Australia’s national wit.
Other International heavyweights visiting include David O’Doherty (IRL), Fin Taylor (UK), Phil Wang (UK), Paul Foot (UK), Douglas Lim (Malaysia), Fern Brady (UK), Daniel Sloss (SCO), Rahul Subramanian (India), Eleanor Tiernan(IRL), Ross Noble (UK), Danny Bhoy (SCO) and Arj Barker (USA) along with other international arrivals.

In addition, the Festival also has many family events including The (Very) Big Laugh Out - bringing the world’s most brilliant street performers to Federation Square and Melbourne Museum for free, Comedy Club For Kids (at Arts Centre Melbourne and Chadstone), Up Next and the Class Clowns National Grand Final. Other special Festival events include The Gala proudly supporting Oxfam, the RAW Comedy National Grand Final, Deadly Funny Final and Showcase, The Great Debate, Jeez Louise and the opening night’s Comedy Allstars Supershow, which officially kicks off the Festival on Wednesday 27 March.
