Few books live in the imagination of children or adults even, like Alice in Wonderland and now all that magic has finally arrived in Melbourne in ACMI’s latest exhibition – Wonderland!
Delivering an exhibition that is ‘Curiouser and curiouser!' as Alice might have said – the show is the perfect antidote to the colder months coming, being part of ACMI’s Winter Masterpiece series.
Be prepared to be lured through mystical Hallways of Doors into the labyrinth that is the world of Alice herself. The Lost Map of Wonderland, despite distracting magical mirrors, secret compartments and dead-ends, leads the visitor through to specially themed mini-exhibit areas, including The Pools of Tears; The Rabbit sends in the Bill; Looking Glass House; Advice from the Caterpillar; and Who Stole the Tarts?
The two exhibits that are the ‘stand out’ encounters are Alice’s Tea Party, where you can partake in a magical digitally created Mad Hatter's Tea Party and The Queen’s Croquet Ground where visitors can be transformed into participants on the big screen - and with the aid of your Lost Map, paint the roses red. And for those of us who may feel slightly ‘technologically challenged’, there are lots of clues as well as friendly guides who can help you navigate your way.
All these digital pleasures are enhanced by an amazing display of more than 300 unique ‘Alice’ objects including illustrations, Magic Lantern projectors, original drawings from the Alice books, animations and cartoons, puppets and models, as well as costumes from Alice films and productions.
At the end of your tour, of this world-premiere Alice event, you will certainly need that well-earned cup of tea!
