Presenting an expansive retrospective of the fashion, women and personalities who have featured in Vogue Australia over the past six decades, Women in Vogue is the latest exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery.

Covering six decades of Vogue archival material that reveals the changing face, roles, and increasing diversity of Australian women. The magazine has been an authoritative voice on all things fashion and beauty, since it's first edition of Vogue Australia hit the shelves in 1959. Women in Vogue: Celebrating sixty years in Australia explores these themes and is presented as a three part narrative: Looking Back, Looking Out and Looking Forward; each story invites audiences to reflect on the contributions of exceptional women, all of whom have graced the pages of Vogue and who through their unique identity and personal journey, have challenged gender stereotyping to help redefine Australian womanhood.

Vogue has photographed politicians, princesses, role models, champions, truth-tellers, storytellers, change-makers and tastemakers, all of whom you will discover in this exhibition,” said Vogue Australia editor-in-chief Edwina McCann. “Some six-decades of images of remarkable women reflect the nation’s evolution – from amorphous to mercurial to uniquely distinguished,” she said.

“A Vogue portrait has the capacity to define the now, and signal shifts in culture and identity,” said Karen Quinlan, Director of the National Portrait Gallery. “We are thrilled to present works by some of the finest portrait photographers, including Alexi Lubomirski, and Australians Will Davidson, Emma Summerton and Nicole Bentley,” she said.
