It is with a tinge of irony that the movie of the same name Nine was produced by the now notorious Weinstein Corporation with a plot that revolves around a collection of female characters and a movie director.

However, unlike these current events, Nine is not about reflecting society’s views of women and men but presenting the struggle all ‘creatives’ face in balancing their personal and professional lives often under unrelenting public scrutiny.

The title Nine refers to the number of women who have had an impact on the life of the main character, Guido Contini, a movie director now struggling with artistic inertia and facing impending marital breakdown. Guido evokes these nine women in scenes from the past and others in the present, drawing upon their strength and some may say their wisdom to eventually overcome this creative impasse and, in the tradition of the very best musicals, help him to find, seek resolution and arrive at ‘true happiness’.

Nine had an Australian debut in 1987, with the dynamic musical returning to Melbourne’s Chapel off Chapel theatre in 2018. Presented by the Stage Art company, with Michael Ralph as Director/Choreographer and Nathan Firm in as Musical Director, they work their magic to bring this musical to life on stage. With an impressive cast, filled with emerging performers like Brierly Smith, Kershawn Theodore, who appear retrospectively as the young Guido, Anthony Scundi, Alana Tranter, Rachel Bronca and Bronte Florian, the show offers a lot of budding talent.

Now over fifty years since its debut on Broadway, Nine has stood the test of time and not had the ‘midlife crisis’ of its central character Guido but continues to offer its audiences a fresh, vibrant and relevant production, that delivers a great night’s entertainment with those unforgettable award-winning songs the show is well-known for and dazzling dance routines.
