Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the first drawings of his book, ‘The Lost Thing’ artist Shaun Tan is proud to present his first commercial solo exhibition at Beinart Gallery from the 5 - 27 May.

A well-known artist, Shaun’s work ‘The Lost Thing’ became a bestseller and went on to be developed into a short film, which won the Australian Film Institute award for Best Animated Short in 2010 and an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2011. The exhibition has both concept drawings for the book and film and new, unseen work based on the universe of The Lost Thing and other imaginary worlds and creatures.

‘The Lost Thing’ was the first book Tan wrote, designed and illustrated and it expressed much of the joy and angst of being a young artist. Coming to love working in this medium – interestingly picture books not really for children- the book did identify as a tale for those with more important things to pay attention to.

Adapted to film, it soon became an Oscar winning animated film, and now 20 years later, Tan is pleased to be able to give a mix of old and new lost things, including some original working drawings from the book and film and send them off from the “department of odds and ends” to new homes and exhibit the worlds of his homeless object-animals and other unique creations.

A Perth artist, Shaun also works as a writer and filmmaker and has developed a reputation of illustrating books that deal with social, political and historical subjects with dream-like imagery. Some of his work, and books he has done include: The Rabbits, The Red Tree, Tales from Outer Suburbia, and The Arrival. Shaun has also worked as a theatre designer and concept artist for Pixar and received the prestigious Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in Sweden for his services to literature for young people.

Shaun Tan will also be doing a book signing this Saturday, 19 May at Beinart Gallery from 1 - 3pm.
