Tennessee Williams fans rejoice, as the renowned playwright’s show, the provocative Suddenly Last Summer, returns to Melbourne this October.

Directed by Stephen Nicolazzo, and performed by Red Stitch Actors Theatre, this dark, nightmarish play is filled with dark symbolic intent when cousins Sebastian and Catherine go on holiday and Sebastian dies.

Leaving Catherine with a horrible a tale, she is soon presumed mad and locked away to keep her mouth shut, with Sebastian’s mother, Violet Venable, particularly affected by the loss. A wealthy widow, Violet soon becomes so offended at the claims made by Catherine, she soon devises a way of getting back at Catherine permanently.

An examination of legacy, sanity and sexuality, this play is a Southern gothic melodrama that takes aim at the audience’s heart but more so highlights the brutal value judgements people make to achieve their own ends.

Be sure to catch Suddenly Last Summer before it ends this November!
