BeMelbourne’s #SummerOfFestivals has had one of its biggest moments with upcoming festival ‘MIDSUMMA’ launching its program last Wednesday – in the same week as the announcement of the successful ‘YES’ vote for marriage equality.

Launching their Midsumma 2018 program at the State Library of Victoria, the festival will feature more than 170 events (that’s 40 per cent more than this year’s) and with 50 per cent of the program free – it promises to be bigger and more accessible than ever over its 22 days of summer festival.

Now is the time to get your 2018 diaries (in whatever shape and form it takes) and lock in some of the fabulous events, performances, and activities on offer.

The best way to start planning is with the three signature events: Midsumma Carnival on 14 January, the traditional Midsumma Pride March on 28 January and Midsumma Horizon on 3 February 2018.

Some shows on offer include:

  • Michael and Phillip are Getting Married in the Morning – is a show for those wanting a taste of things to come when marriage equality is a reality. Performed at the Bluestone Church Arts Space in Footscray, it will be on from 17 – 21 January 2018.

The two ‘must do’ events are:

  • The new signature event Midsumma Horizon at State Library Victoria – an arty party to celebrate queer history, where revellers can get their portraits taken throughout the night to be zipped-up and archived for posterity in a time capsule at Australia Lesbian and Gay Archives.

  • The ‘best value’ event is the Drag-a-Thon – Day Drag – The 86 Cabaret Bar (185 Smith Street, Fitzroy) on Australia Day from 3.00 pm to after midnight! Kicking the day off (in high heels) with a BBQ at 3.00pm and followed at 8.00pm, this event will be a non-stop top drag performances. Best of all – it’s all FREE!

For those ‘Westies’ (or people living in the Western suburbs), Go West are joining up with Midsumma offering a range of events, performances and activities in Melbourne’s western suburbs. With wide coverage of events – even St Albans get a guernsey! See GoWest’s Facebook page (link: www.facebook.com.gowestpride) for details.

And when all this appears as not enough, Midsumma Festival can also offer those who are ultra-organised early bird tickets for a 15 per cent discount until 9 December. Tickets can be purchased at: midsummas.org.au.
