World-class surrealist art takes centre-stage at the René Magritte exhibition opening at the Latrobe Regional Gallery in Morwell today.

Featuring a collection of photographs and films by major Belgian Surrealist artist, René Magritte, the exhibition is unique to the region, and expected to attract visitors from the region and throughout Australia.

Latrobe Regional Gallery Director, Dr Mark Themann said the exhibition is a significant coup for the Gallery. “This is an exhibition of international standing that puts Latrobe Regional Gallery on the global art map.”

“Locals and visitors to the region will have the opportunity to experience an impressive artistic event in a facility that is purpose-built to stage exhibitions of the highest calibre.”

Keen to bring new audiences to little known area of art, René Magritte: The Revealing Image, Photos and Film shows 130 original photographs by Magritte and eight films. Most of these works have never been exhibited outside of Europe.

Hosted in collaboration with the Magritte Foundation Belgium, the chief curator of the exhibition Xavier Canonne, considers the collection to be a rare cultural treasure.

“The photographs and films were created as works of art by Magritte, one of the signature Western artists of the twentieth century,” Canonne said.

“The Magritte exhibition sets a high standard for art in the region, and is not to be missed,” Dr Themann said.

The René Magritte exhibition also coincides with the recent redevelopment of the gallery, which has undergone an extensive refurbishment.

To celebrate the opening of the exhibition, a book by Xavier Canonne on the exhibition is being published by Ludion, and distributed by Thames and Hudson.
