This performance of Tales of 12 Chinese Zodiac possesses a fantastical flight made especially for you. In this performance we can see a part of our personality on the stage; as we all have a Chinese year we were born into. You can look forward to seeing your own Chinese year come to life in this stage production by the China Arts and Entertainment Group (CAEG).

My Chinese zodiac is the year of the rooster and Director and choreographer, Shen Chen transforms the rooster into a great phoenix-like bird. Perhaps this is the cocky bird’s ego and outlook of itself, 'the show-off in the yard’, but the phoenix is both dazzling and beautiful. The performance has various tongue-in-cheek parts that only some people may get such as the cunning rats sneaking up to the front ahead of the Ox during the finale of the performance. The rats are now before the ox in Chinese Zodiac signs. The four seasons of the year are also recreated here. Spring, Autumn, Winter and Summer are also an important part of the historical and agrarian Chinese culture.

Exquisite gowns and costumes with superb performances by the 60 dancers from China Oriental Performing Arts Group completes this choreography by legendary, Shen Chen. Shen Chen mastered in Choreography and went onto become the Executive Director of the Beijing Olympics’ opening ceremony. Shen Chen’s artistic expertise coupled with multimedia and sound effects sets up the unique musical instruments that filled the venue with grand sounds by the many percussion instruments.

These Chinese and world percussion instruments are skilfully liberated to recapture China’s natural position as culturally astute and compassionate towards their historical and cultural ancestors. Ancient Chinese culture is more than 5000 years old. Peking University says present day Chinese culture is an amalgamation of old world traditions and a westernised lifestyle; the two co-exist. This is exactly what Shen Chen has conveyed to us here in the theatre with Tales of 12 Chinese Zodiac.
