FEMALE MASCULINITY IS EXAMINED IN THE BUTCH MONOLOGUES

The vast range of female masculinity comes to life in Midsumma festival’s powerful, The Butch Monologues, on at St Kilda’s Theatre Works from 27 January to 3 February 2019.
Showcasing the secret stories of sexuality, vulnerability and desire from the world of
butches, masculine women, gender rebels and transmen living across the world, this work gives fresh language and intonation to this group. Touching on butch beginnings, butch desire and desirability, butch bravado and vulnerability, butch-on-femme sex, butch-on-butch sex, switches, stones, butch as a trap, the butch body, violence, heroes and clothing, this looks at many of the defining aspects of the Butch identity.
An exciting new collaboration, The Butch Monologues brings together Theatre Works in St.Kilda and Hotpencil Press, an independent not-for-profit UK publishing house promoting high quality, unique, contemporary and re-visited works largely ignored by mainstream audiences.
Under the leadership of Laura Bridgeman, who works with Vital Xposure, a dynamic touring theatre company under the creative leadership of disabled artist Julie McNamara and a group of butches, transmen and gender rebels from Australia, the performance has joined together in the spirit of masculine solidarity, with the aim of promoting female
masculinity and butch pride.
The performance is followed by a post-show Q&A with Laura Bridgeman, Julia McNamara and the cast.
