The Hardware Société cafe
It is good to know that when fancy friends from out of town come to visit, you can take them to The Hardware Société.
A Melbourne brunch institution, this place is unashamedly French and was decked out in full Bastille Day glory when we went.
When arriving the staff were very polite and knowledgeable about the menu. The menu itself, is both in English and French. This just adds to the charm of the place, with the menu selections loving reflecting their origins and interpreting the cuisine very well.
We had a sit down and ordered some food.
My out-of-town friend, ordered the black bun eggs benedict with lobster – and was actually shocked to find that it had really lobster! I was pleased at her surprise but quietly purred for having chosen the place.
I had the fruit toast – which I thought would be simple enough but was generous and delicious, with the French caramel jam being a wonderful touch. As an added dessert we had the brioche special with pannacotta, creme fraiche, raspberries, blueberries and crumble. This was divine and decadent.
The coffee and juice were delicious and apart from the loudness of the place – it is small, packed and incredibly busy (which appears to be all the time!) it was great.
Overall this place is a great people pleaser. And while it won’t disappoint – it may require you to queue – sadly – and unfortunately these are just the perils of wanting to eat at one of Melbourne brunch institutions.
