Creatives, and writers in particular, often examine the big issues of life and death as part of their craft and never is this more true than in this year’s Melbourne Writers Festival (MWF) which starts today, from the 24 August - 2 September 2018.
Offering a huge selection of international and local talents, headliners include cult figure Author Irvine Welsh, Magda Szubanski, and Paul Kelly among many others. The festival builds on this year’s theme of ‘Life and Death’ in a program heavy with intimate discussions, new writing, theatre and music.
MWF Artistic Director Marieke Hardy says the theme aims to engage the audience. “Our theme, a matter of life and death, is a reflection on the things people reach for in order to survive and those moments where we look to words for comfort."
“It is a celebration of empathy. Yes, life is hard, but we are in it together.”
In accordance with this, Magda Szubanski is attending her own funeral party. Second Last Rites, Author Irvine Welsh has reflections on Redemption and Singer Songwriter Paul Kelly will perform poetry to music in Other People’s Words.
The MWF also features an impressive and diverse list of guests, from Black Panther Author and Journalist,Ta-Nehisi Coates, Pulitzer Prize winners Ronan Farrow and Emily Nussbaum and Andrew W. K – there are writers, poets, wordsmiths and talents of all types to see you through the end of winter!
