Few childhood favourites come as loved as the ‘Wind in the Willows’ and in Melbourne we are spoilt with the luck of seeing The Australian Shakespeare Company do a season of this show from the 20 December to 27 January 2019.
First performed in the Royal Botanical Gardens in 1987, this play offers up the universally-loved Ratty, Mole, Badger, Otter, Portly and the ‘famous’ Mr Toad, in Kenneth Grahame’s story of these ‘motley group’ of characters, and of their life on the riverbank.
Set at the start of a glorious Spring season, the story begins with the unlikely friendship of when Mole meets Ratty, which then leads on to Ratty introducing Mole to Badger, Otter, Portly and Toad, and the wonderful and wild adventures they have together.
Telling a tale where friends battle foes united, support each other and learn about the importance of friendship, this year’s production has fun for young and old!
The play also sees the Head Chief Rabbit transform the audience into rabbits, and children encouraged to get involved in the action and sing and be part of the adventure, offering interactive theatre at its best.
Already delighting audiences and critics alike, the Australian Shakespeare Company has also created work for hundreds of artists and creatives over the past three decades. It is a testament to the company’s work in the industry, and the vital support it gives to Melbourne’s Arts community.
