Presenting a passionate foodie, cooking instructor and renowned Queen of artisanal pop-up dinners across Melbourne, Chef Ella Mittas is presenting Women and Witchcraft: A Celebration of Power at Abbotsford Convent from 23 November to 2 December.
Offering an art exhibition showcasing works from a range of all female artists interpreting the feminine divine in its magical and supernatural forms, the works will be on display at St Helier's Gallery in tandem with a series of five-course 'Celebration' themed dinners inspired by the pagan Sabbat Beltane.
Featuring female winemakers and musicians, the dinners will draw on the traditional Beltane message of abundance and fertility on all levels when the earth's energies are at its height in the late spring and early summer season.
Now in her third year of assisting with Women and Witchcraft, Ella says this is the first year that an exhibition has been organised alongside the dinners. "I started doing these events because I love food and cooking. I had a hard time working in the hospitality industry as there was a toxic nature in restaurant kitchens. For me this event is about celebrating being an outcast and the power of the female community at large."
"Recently, the women's empowerment movement has gained so much momentum. A large part of society has gone from not acknowledging that there is a real disparity between the way that women and men get to participate in the world, to now believing that there is a problem that needs to be changed."
Featuring artists such as Melissa Grisancich, Celestre Mountjoy, Ruby Hoppen, Lucia Canuto, Linsey Gosper, Eloise Grills, Molly Dyson and Lucy Kostos, the dinners offer talented works with ravishing food, all staffed by Merchant Catering, a social enterprise that provides hospitality training and employment to women of refugee backgrounds.
