YOU AND I - THEATRE REVIEW

A stylish show where the bodies do the talking!

Featuring as part of the Melbourne Midsumma Festival ̶ celebratory of LGBTI rights and the freedom to choose and be yourself - You & I introduces us to real-life couple Jesse Scott and Lachlan McAulay, cofounders of internationally award-winning company Casus Circus, who here take their performing arts to exquisite new heights. Having seduced also their French audience, the group spends a large part of the year performing in Europe and have their eyes set on the Festival d’Avignon next - a contemporary arts event attracting crowds from all over the world. With performances “rich in human connection, integrity, cultural diversity and precise, intelligent choreography” in You & I the married duo deliver a one-hour show faithful to all these human and aesthetic values. A rich yet tender love story between two men and an authentic life journey that we become privy to, this elegant and highly sensual show covers all the complexities of human emotions ranging from initial infatuation and a coming together of bodies and emotions, painful separation and aching solitude, rekindling, maturity and mutual compassion ̶ and an ultimate connection where the bond between the two has grown stronger. This whole gamut of emotions is seamlessly organised into different chapters each with its own musical piece setting the tone for the story unfolding on stage and where Jamey Johnson’s achingly beautiful rendition of Jimmie Davis’ 1940’s song You are My Sunshine, rapid Contrabanda by DeVotchKa, and melancholic Pfau, by Daigo Hanadaoiu stand out above the rest and move and captivate us throughout.

With no words spoken, Scott and McAulay, rather, highlight the importance of touch and the power of the gaze in a show that becomes a poem and a powerfully acrobatic ballet between two people symbiotically attached to one another until the very end. Absolutely stunning!
